Quick answer

Pack light cotton clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples, comfortable walking shoes that slip on and off easily, sunglasses and a hat. Add a warm layer for winter evenings on the lake (November to February) and a small umbrella from July to September.

Key facts

  • Temples ask for covered shoulders and knees
  • You remove footwear at every temple, so slip-on shoes help
  • Winter nights can drop to around 8–10°C
  • Eklingji and Nathdwara don't allow phones, cameras or leather inside

Udaipur is easy to pack for, with a few local details worth knowing. Here’s what we tell friends who visit.

The essentials, all year

  • Light, breathable clothes in cotton or linen.
  • Something that covers shoulders and knees for Jagdish Temple, Eklingji, Nathdwara and Ranakpur. A stole or scarf works.
  • Slip-on walking shoes. You’ll take them off at every temple, and the Old City lanes are steep.
  • Socks, for hot marble temple floors in the afternoon.
  • Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen. The sun is strong even in winter.
  • A refillable water bottle.
  • Some cash for autos, temple shoe stands and small shops, though UPI works almost everywhere.
  • A small day bag you can leave in a locker at temples that don’t allow phones.

Winter: November to February

Days are warm, around 24–30°C, but mornings and nights drop to around 8–14°C. Pack a light jacket or sweater for the sunset boat, rooftop dinners and early starts for Bahubali Hills. A shawl doubles as a temple cover.

Summer: March to June

Pack the lightest cotton you own, loose and long-sleeved to keep the sun off. A cap, electrolyte sachets and a scarf for dust. Plan to be out early and late; see best time to visit.

Monsoon: July to September

A compact umbrella, quick-dry clothes and sandals with grip for wet steps and ghats. A light rain jacket is useful for Sajjangarh, which can sit in the clouds. Keep a plastic pouch for your phone.

Day trips

For Kumbhalgarh and Chittorgarh, wear proper shoes and carry water; both involve long, exposed walks. Ranakpur doesn’t allow leather items inside, so leave belts and leather bags in the car.

Frequently asked questions

What should women wear in Udaipur?

Anything comfortable works in the city. For temples, cover shoulders and knees; a light scarf or stole is the easiest way to do this. Many visitors buy a leheriya dupatta in Bada Bazaar.

Do I need warm clothes in Udaipur?

From November to February, yes. Days are warm, but evenings on the lake and early mornings are chilly. A light jacket or sweater is enough.

What shoes are best for Udaipur?

Comfortable walking shoes with grip, ideally ones you can slip off quickly at temples. The Old City is hilly and the fort walks are long.
