What to buy in Udaipur, which bazaar sells it, when shops open, and how to bargain without spoiling anyone's day.
Hours are typical; many Old City shops close one day a week.
Udaipur's crafts, and what makes a good one.
The Udaipur school of painting, at its height in the 17th and 18th centuries: court scenes, hunts and Krishna stories in mineral colours. Painters still work at Hathi Pol.
Large painted cloth backdrops for Shrinathji at Nathdwara: lotus ponds, cows and festival scenes.
Votive plaques of village deities, made by potters in Molela near Nathdwara.
Tie-dye in dots, and wave-patterned stripes worn at Teej. Sold by the metre in Bada Bazaar.
Painted puppets and toys from local workshops, the classic souvenir.
Heavy tribal silver around Ghanta Ghar, and thewa, gold worked onto glass, from nearby Pratapgarh.
Fixed-price shops say so on the door or the tag. Everywhere else, a little bargaining is normal.
Ask the price, look at two or three other shops, then come back. Most sellers expect it.
Stay friendly. A smile and a counter-offer works better than walking away mid-sentence.
For paintings, ask what it's painted on (paper, silk, old paper) and whether the colours are natural.
For silver, ask the rate per gram and have the piece weighed in front of you.
Keep small notes; change can be hard to find early in the day.
