Bagore Ki Haveli is an 18th-century mansion on Gangaur Ghat, now a museum (about ₹60) with an evening folk dance show, Dharohar, from 7 to 8 pm daily (about ₹90–150). Visit the museum in the late afternoon, then queue about 30 minutes before the show for a good seat.
Key facts
- Built in the 18th century by Amar Chand Badwa, a prime minister of Mewar
- Restored by the West Zone Cultural Centre and opened as a museum
- Dharohar show: 7–8 pm daily
- Museum and show are separate tickets
Gangaur Ghat is one of the prettiest corners of Lake Pichola, and the long, many-windowed building on its edge is Bagore Ki Haveli. You can visit twice in one day: once for the museum, once for the show.
A little history
Amar Chand Badwa, a prime minister of Mewar, built the haveli in the 18th century. It later passed to the royal family and fell into disrepair before the West Zone Cultural Centre restored it and opened it as a museum. Today it has more than a hundred rooms around courtyards and terraces facing the water.
The museum
Expect costumes, jewellery boxes, kitchen utensils, mirror-work rooms, wall paintings and one gallery of giant turbans, including what’s billed as one of the world’s largest. The rooms show how a wealthy Mewar household actually lived. Allow about an hour. Entry is about ₹60.
The Dharohar show
Every evening from 7 to 8 pm, local performers stage an hour of Rajasthani folk dance and music in the courtyard. You’ll usually see:
- Ghoomar, the swirling dance of Rajasthani women.
- Terah Taali, played with thirteen small cymbals tied to the body.
- Bhavai, where a dancer balances a tower of pots on her head.
- Kathputli, the string puppets. Read about Rajasthani puppets.
Tickets are about ₹90–150. See our full guide to the Dharohar show.
How to do both
- Visit the museum around 5 pm.
- Step out to Gangaur Ghat for sunset.
- Join the show queue by 6:30 pm in season. Seating is first come, first served, on cushions and benches.
- After the show, cross the Daiji bridge to Ambrai Ghat for the lit palace, or have dinner on a rooftop.
Tips
- The museum and show are separate tickets.
- Sit near the front centre for Bhavai; the pot tower is the highlight.
- Bring a cushion or shawl in winter; the courtyard gets cold.
